Following the 2009 bicentenary year of Charles Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication ‘On the Origins of Species’, Shrewsbury’s annual Darwin Festival returns with a full programme of events. Scroll down and take a look.

This year the seventh annual Darwin Festival takes places over a long weekend from 12th - 14th February 2010.

Darwin & the Darwinian Controversy

Prof. A. C. Grayling will address the controversy surrounding Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution. His talk will be followed by a general discussion of Darwin's life and works.

Anthony Grayling is Professor of Philosophy at Birkbeck College, University of London, a philosopher who believes that philosophy should emerge from its ivory tower and play useful role in society. He is involved in UN human rights initiatives, is a Fellow of the World Economic Forum, helped lawyers acting for Diane Pretty, and has written and spoken for freedom of speech and secularism and against faith schools. He has been a Guardian columnist and written for The Times, the Financial Times, Observer, Independent on Sunday, Economist, Literary Review, New Statesman and Prospect. Participating regularly in radio and television discussions, Anthony Grayling is probably one of Britain's best known intellectuals.

Dance workshops for the Beagle Ball, 13th, 20th, & 29th September

6.30 to 8.00pm at The Lion Hotel

On 3rd October a Ball will be held at The Lion Hotel to celebrate the return of Charles Darwin from The Beagle in October 1836.

These professionally-led dance workshops are for anyone interested in learning and performing dances of the period at the Ball.
